I can't believe it's taken me so long to finally read Deerskin by Robin McKinley (NOTE: spoilers at the link). I needed something engaging, arresting, of mythical proportions.
It's been years, but yeah, that's a good read. Unlike a lot of fantasy I read in high school, it doesn't qualify as mental chewing gum. It's more of a several course meal with wine...flavors to pay attention to and resonances that are different each time it's read.
