So last night I helped ordain the Unitarian Universalist minister-intern.
I laughed, I cried, I learned a lot, and as Jeff reminded me, there's a lot of reasons why I crave good ritual in my life.
Today I had engaged to be at work for a Campus Clean up day.
Some of my Drama babies wanted rehearsal time; however not everyone in that show was there for the rehearsal.
I think it went kind of mrgly; however I decided not to spark-plug it and to work on preparing the environment instead. My classrooms were FILTHY and cluttered and needed attention desperately. Also, quite honestly, I'm not about to take over for another director in the middle of the production if I can help it, even if she's a novice director. I'm helping around the edges, but it's HER show.
So.
and then I was lucky this morning, as one of my first-period kids, Brian, stuck his head in my room around 11:30 and said, "hey Ms. H, anything you want done in here?" Yay for campus clean up spirit. Another of my first perioders was with him, Kevin, and several of their friends.
They did really good work; the room is possible to teach a regular-ed class in now (rather than the art-project space it had become last week) and we/i were/was able to pick up all the accumulated trash and clutter and make the place much more habitable. (Ok, they were playing around and I got beaned by a tennis ball. But like I told the kid (who was apologizing lots, to be sure), lucky for him I got hit in the back of the head, or else I'd have come after him with the Stick of Whapping (tm). I gave him a little bit of a hard time but I wasn't hurt at all, just surprised. And it was a pure miscalculation/lack of attention on his part. No worries.
So my classroom doesn't drive me nuts (as much) anymore. the theater is still pretty bad, clutterred and whatever, but I did what I could, and the 5 or 6 friends of Brian and Kevin (one in particular, named Tim, was quite impressive with his ability to stick with a task) did a lot more, and it's lots lots BETTER.
EDIT: and I told those boys that if they want to come see the one-acts on Monday or Tuesday night, I will let them in for free. Seemed only fair, and it was one of the only ways I could think of immediately to tell them how much their help meant to me.
(OH! and the kids from leadership were repainting the aged, graffiti'd, sun-faded mural on the cafeteria.
battymaiden, you should come see it once you're back from NYC!! and
deedeebythebay, it looks really good!)
So soon I shower to get all the dust and whatnot off, and head out for a birthday party for one of my best buddies.
